Eric Dane Confirms ALS Diagnosis: Still Returning for ‘Euphoria’ Season 3

On April 11, 2025, actor Eric Dane, renowned for his roles in Grey’s Anatomy and Euphoria, publicly disclosed his diagnosis with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), a progressive neurodegenerative disease also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease. Despite the challenges ahead, Dane expressed gratitude for his family’s support and affirmed his intention to continue working, including returning to the set of Euphoria for its upcoming season.

Dane, 52, shared his diagnosis in an exclusive statement to People, stating, “I am grateful to have my loving family by my side as we navigate this next chapter.” He emphasized his commitment to his career, noting his plans to resume filming Euphoria, where he portrays Cal Jacobs, with production for season three commencing on April 14, 2025.

ALS is a rare and incurable disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord, leading to muscle weakness, loss of motor functions, and eventually impacting essential abilities like speaking and breathing. While there is no known cure, some patients live for decades after diagnosis .​

In addition to his health announcement, Dane and his wife, actress Rebecca Gayheart, have recently dismissed their long-standing divorce case originally filed in 2018. The couple, who share two daughters, Billie Beatrice and Georgia Geraldine, filed for dismissal of their divorce in March 2025 after years of proceedings .

Dane’s career spans over three decades, with notable roles including Dr Mark Sloan on Grey’s Anatomy, Jason Dean on Charmed, and Captain Tom Chandler on The Last Ship. His portrayal of Cal Jacobs in Euphoria has been particularly acclaimed, and he looks forward to continuing this role despite his diagnosis .​
